"The book deals with the highly topical and rapidly evolving field of long-distance radio communication, particularly in outer space. The technical term ‘weak signals’ refers to radio signals whose level, at a given bandwidth, is comparable in magnitude to the level of natural background noise, particularly in an environment characterised by a low level of thermal noise. This exceptionally complex subject ranges from general physical principles to highly specialised issues concerning the design and optimisation of microwave antennas, low-noise amplifiers, receivers, transmitters and frequency synthesizers with very specific characteristics. The book devotes considerable attention to the advanced technique of radio communication via signal reflection from the lunar surface (EME), where, using modern and constantly improving software for digital communication, it is possible to establish connections with signals that are 10 or more decibels weaker than those in analogue modes. The individual thematic chapters of the book briefly summarise the theory and practically applicable relationships, and supplement the topic with a description of specific solutions for individual parts of the communication system. The detailed examples of calculations and implementations are interesting and very useful for understanding. The author of the book, Miroslav Kasal, is an internationally recognised expert. His exceptional reputation is evidenced, among other things, by repeated invitations to the USA, where he collaborated at the AMSAT laboratory on the integration and testing of the Phase IIID satellite, and to French Guiana, where he participated in pre-launch tests and prepared the satellite for launch into GTO orbit. At the Institute of Radio Electronics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technologies, Brno University of Technology, Prof. Kasal established a unique telemetry and command station, through which not only domestic but also foreign experts can communicate with satellites in space. A unique strength of the book is its broad scope, covering diverse topics that are absolutely essential for successful work with weak signals, which were previously scattered across various publications. The book is intended for those with a background in the field of weak radio signals and will be of great use to university students."
