Refrain / Refrain

For the publication Chorus (Refrén), Jan Zálešák has chosen a concept comprising three thematically linked sections: a catalogue section containing visual documentation and accompanying texts for the exhibitions held; furthermore, an extensive text by art theorist Hana Drštičková, in which the author summarises the results of her own research focused on the exhibition Against Nature and its legacy, which was of fundamental importance for the conceptual coherence of Zálešák’s year-long cycle; and finally, a synthesising and self-reflective text penned by Jan Zálešák himself. In this essay, Zálešák summarises his own experience of curating exhibitions at the Kurzor Gallery and also reveals some important thematic overlaps and horizontal connections between them. In addition, in his text Zálešák attempts, in a sense, to ‘fully articulate’ his relationship to the aforementioned exhibition Against Nature, its conceptual legacy, and also parallels in contemporary artistic practice. The publication Chorus (Refrén) was produced in connection with Jan Zálešák’s curatorial work at the Galerie Kurzor in 2022.
