The author addresses, in comprehensive fashion, the degradation of materials and their protection against the effects of various environments. The subject is first explained systematically from the perspective of the interaction between a material and an aggressive medium. A further section is devoted to a description of the basic principles of the mechanism, kinetics and forms of material degradation — in particular the corrosion of metals, the corrosion of polymers in chemical environments, and the photochemical degradation and ageing of polymers in the atmosphere. In the section on protective systems against degradation, particular emphasis is placed on the selection of resistant materials, structural design, inorganic non-metallic layers, metallic and alloy coatings, organic paints, and powder and plastic coatings. The book also provides information on temporary protection during storage and transport. The text is accompanied by numerous illustrative photographs and practical tables.
