Product description

Living Amidst Gardens is a captivating guide to the houses and villas of the Masaryk Quarter in Brno. The chapters are arranged chronologically, from the first villas in this area, built as early as the 19th century, through the construction boom of the First Republic, to interesting buildings from recent years. The publication was written with both educational and promotional aims. The author’s aim was to introduce readers, in an accessible manner, to a district that stands out for its perfect harmony between the garden environment and modern architecture. The author presents a selection of the most significant buildings, with brief descriptions and the exact addresses where the specific properties are located. The book can therefore also serve as an informative guide to this district, which directly invites the reader to take a stroll. Professor PhDr. Jan Sedlák, CSc. (1943-2016) was one of the leading figures of the so-called ‘Brno School of Art History’. Professionally, he was associated with the Regional Centre for State Monument Care and Nature Conservation in Brno and the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology. Until his death, he worked at the Department of Art Theory and History at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. He focused primarily on Santini’s buildings, the Art Nouveau period and modern architecture in Brno.
