The book presents the sculptural work of Jan Ambrůž from his early works of the first half of the 1980s to the present day, in which, alongside his sculptural creations, the author’s activist and ecologically oriented interest in the cultivation of nature and the landscape in his native Šarovy has come to the fore. Throughout all his creative phases, Ambrůz’s works represent an authentic and exceptionally interesting contribution to the nature of sculptural work and contemporary art, situated at the intersection of sculpture, object, installation, intervention and architecture, particularly in relation to space and nature. His sculptural works are always based on specific technological processes and the properties of the material, which determine their final form. They apply the principles of geometry, particularly in compositional arrangements and structures, temporary installations that can be assembled and disassembled, but also in the use of basic volumes of stereometric bodies. The concise and reduced formal language of the sculptures and installations also contains an unspoken yet latently present transcendent dimension. Although these are often works of monumental dimensions, their proportions and form always reflect, in their own way, the physical scale of the human being. Although ironworks, glassworks or stonemasons are involved in the production of the works, it is important to the artist that he is able to create his works largely by himself and to handle them himself. The book contains a rich pictorial supplement, an interview with the artist, a brief biography, a list of solo and group exhibitions, and a selected bibliography, including exhibition catalogues, publications and reviews. The supplement also includes a list of activities by the Jiné krajiny association, updated as of the publication date, and a loose-leaf map of Jiné krajiny marking installations, routes and locations. The publication was released to mark the artist’s solo exhibition at the Brno House of Arts in 2022.
