The publication proceeds from the premise that structural inequalities and discrimination against non-heterosexual people exist in society — and existed to an even greater degree in the past. Their lived experience, in which they were compelled to come to terms with rejection by their natural social environment, the system, politics, the state, and its institutions, constitutes a significant and indeed irreplaceable source of cultural production. The chapters of the book, divided into four sections, present interpretations of objects, texts, image and design that may be read as queer. The temporality of such reading and the necessity of reassessing canonical qualitative standards of high culture are brought to the fore. The authors further address the question of the extent to which it is possible to connect private life (social and sexual) with artistic and literary creation, and to what extent queer lived experience is an advantage and to what extent a handicap in terms of professional success — why, on the one hand, it forms an integral part of the reading and interpretation of the work of non-heterosexual people, while, at the same time, there is no causal relationship between their work and their life circumstances.
