Product description

This book follows on from the author’s previous successful work Energy and Global Warming: Changes in the Earth in the Course of Energy Supply (2006), which won the Josef Hlávka Prize. It is, however, considerably more extensive and brings a wealth of new insights to the subject. The publication is intended for the general public, but can also provide much of value to specialists. It was written with the aim of illuminating, in the broadest possible context, one of the most serious global problems facing not only humanity but, by extension, the entire plant and animal kingdom on Earth. At the same time, it seeks to demonstrate that should humanity address the problem of global warming in a worldwide, swift, comprehensive, and sufficiently resolute manner, it possesses adequate means for its resolution. Compared with the many books that have recently appeared on the subject of global warming and the resulting climate change, this volume is distinctive in two respects: first, in the breadth and complexity of its approach, as it discusses in detail not only the causes, course, and consequences of global warming, but also highlights potential solutions, always with a critical assessment of the availability of the relevant technologies, including their economic costs; and second, it thoroughly explains and evaluates the physical, chemical and biological principles underlying all the processes manifesting themselves in global climate change on Earth, and their highly complex interrelationships, at the level of a scientific monograph yet without demanding mathematical material, so that the exposition iscomprehensible to the widest possible readership.
